Michigander’s The Broadcast Tour Comes Home to Michigan
St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, Michigan was lit up green Friday night as fans gathered for the Detroit stop of Michigander’s The Broadcast tour. Excitement was buzzing through the air as fans looked forward to the night ahead of them. This show was special. This was Michigander’s homecoming.
To open up the night of good music and good vibes, was Tennessee native, Cece Coakley. With her sweet-vocals, she instantly won over the room. Her vocals especially shined through during her song “865”, a song about her home in Tennessee. Between songs, she stopped to talk about her day in Detroit, and how some rogue glass on the freeway on her way to the venue caused her to get a flat tire. “And this is supposed to be the Motor City, boooo” she laughed with a thumbs down. Later in the set, as she was tuning her guitar, a fan from the crowd asked where her skirt was from, and she chuckled before replying with “I got it at a thrift store, which is the most annoying thing ever to say”, garnering laughs from the crowd in front of her. Her final song of the night, “Halfway”, a personal favorite of mine, earned some crowd participation with a call and response closing out her set.
Michigander took the stage for their highly-anticipated set, and the entire room immediately went wild as frontman, Jason Singer, calls out “It’s good to be home!”. These guys were here to have fun, and they made sure everyone knew it. The energy and playful confidence on stage was so high, it couldn’t help but rub off onto the hundreds of people packed into St Andrews Hall, as they were told “The vibes were good”. The playful energy continued into the track “Emotional”. A few songs later, the energy quieted down a bit, as the band went into piano ballad “Breaker Box”, but not one bit of attention was lost as the crowd soaked it in. You could feel the gratitude overflowing for the people gathered in front of them, as Singer told the crowd, “Playing this important room in Detroit with my best friends is so special. I saw Jack White here recently, he’s my hero, you’re my hero, thank you for being here”. Later in the set the group covered “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes, another nod to the Detroit native musician, and the whole room went wild, clapping and singing along. We also got to hear an unreleased song off the soon-to-be-released debut album, titled “Socialite”, a guitar heavy track with a loud, upbeat energy, that I can’t wait to listen to again once it’s released.
Before playing their final song of the night, Singer made sure to thank the crowd for being at the show once more, adding the sentiment “Remember, it’s not about who you are, it's who you’re with. We are Michigander, and we are your Band”. Closing out their set with their recently released track “Giving Up”, the energy in the room surged. Watching from the balcony, I could feel the floor shaking under my feet. After taking their final bows and leaving the stage, Singer appeared on stage once again, telling everyone they were “trying not to do any encores this tour, because we’re tired”, but Detroit, we were special. Singer played a solo acoustic track that was about chasing your dreams, before the rest of the band joined him on stage for one final track of the night.
