chokecherry Announce Debut EP + Share "Messy Star" Visualizer
Chokecherry, a shoe gaze x grunge pop trio based in San Francisco, has announced that their debut EP, titled Messy Star, will be released on October 25th.
The trio, consisting of vocalist/guitarist Izzie Clark, bassist/vocalist E. Scarlett Levinson, and drummer Abri Crocitto, have released the visualizer for the Messy Star title track which shares the same name. This powerful, experimental track will be the final pre-released single off of the EP.
Messy Star, the single, took Chokecherry on a journey from the moment they started writing it. Beginning as a heavier track, once they hit the studio they were pushed to experiment with it a bit more than they were used to. Straying away from typical methods, no longer only using live instruments, and including their first incorporation of samples, were game changers that helped take this track to a new level. Taking inspiration from artists like Lana Del Rey and Mannequin Pussy, as well as some sprinkles of Radiohead, this track has its unique feeling. Once finding the direction they are going to take, Chokecherry says, "The track still felt like a journey, but instead of simply a long drive now, it felt like crawling out from the underworld into heaven itself. The chorus breaks into an entirely new world than the one the verses occupy. It turns from strange trip hop grunge to a more classic heavy shoegaze track with angelic vocals."
The video to accompany the track is a commentary on the destructive effect that wreaks havoc on artists due to celebrity culture and follows the story of a burning-out star. Chokecherry explains, "It touches on themes of feeling seen and scrutinized, wanting things other people have (or even wanting to be someone else), and the desire to break away from stardom and the feeling of being watched and perceived. The 'supernova' lyric is a reference to musicians and stars 'burning out' like we have seen in contemporary celebrity culture."
